Elgon Coffee 2023 Coffee Tour to Kenya
Mr. Bernard Wangamati and Mr. Cordell Fantroy Spearhead a Journey of Empowerment and Collaboration within Kenya’s Coffee Industry
In the heart of the picturesque landscapes surrounding Mt. Elgon in western Kenya, a transformative coffee tour unfolded as Elgon Coffee CEO, Mr. Bernard Wangamati, and his business partner, Mr. Cordell Fantroy, embarked on a mission to connect with the very roots of the coffee they champion. The tour took them to the Green Light Farmers, Sogomo Coffee Estate, Sakami Ranches Ltd, Chwele Coffee Society, Cheskaki Mt. Elgon Coffee Mill, Nakayonjo Society, and culminated with a meeting at Musese Mill.
Empowering Green Light Farmers:
The journey began with a pivotal meeting with Green Light Farmers, a group of empowered individuals supported by Elgon Coffee. Out of the 200 farmers associated with Green Light, an impressive 143 were present. Mr. Bernard Wangamati seized the opportunity to inspire and motivate the farmers, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high farming standards to ensure the production of top-quality coffee beans. Elgon Coffee’s commitment to these farmers extends beyond market access, fostering a community that values sustainable and ethical farming practices.
Sogomo Coffee Estate:
The entourage then visited Sogomo Coffee Estate, a second-generation family-owned farm with a rich history dating back to the early 1990s. Originally established by Philip Sogomo, the farm has become synonymous with excellence in coffee production. Today, under the watchful eyes of Philip’s sons and their mother Alice, the 36-hectare estate produces approximately 600 bags of coffee annually. The legacy of Sogomo Coffee Estate exemplifies the dedication and passion embedded in Kenya’s coffee culture.
Sakami Ranches Ltd:
Next on the agenda was Sakami Ranches Ltd, a diversified family-owned farming company founded in 2004 by Gloria and Jarmo Gummerus. Engaged in coffee, macadamia, avocado, dairy, and vegetable production, Sakami Ranches Ltd epitomizes the multifaceted nature of modern agriculture. Sakami Coffee, a trademark associated with the farm, is a testament to the commitment to quality and sustainability. The farm, nestled on the slopes of Mt. Elgon at an altitude of 1800 meters, offers an ideal environment for cultivating premium coffee.
Chwele Coffee Society and Cheskaki Mt. Elgon Coffee Mill:
Continuing the tour, the Elgon Coffee team engaged with Chwele Coffee Society, a crucial player in the region, addressing challenges and exploring potential collaborations. A visit to Cheskaki Mt. Elgon Coffee Mill provided insight into the meticulous process of milling Elgon Coffee. The team observed the delicate art of cupping coffee, from parchment to tracing the source, ensuring the highest standards are maintained at every step.
Nakayonjo Society and Musese Mill:
The tour also included visits to Nakayonjo Society and Musese Mill. In discussions with the Nakayonjo Society board members, possibilities for partnerships were explored to further uplift coffee farmers in the region. The final meeting with the Musese Mill team delved into potential collaborations, solidifying Elgon Coffee’s commitment to fostering mutually beneficial relationships within the industry.
Africa Global Logistics (AGL):
The grand finale of the tour took place at Africa Global Logistics (AGL), where Elgon Coffee is stored before being shipped. Understanding the logistics and storage intricacies ensured that the team appreciated the meticulous efforts involved in maintaining the coffee’s freshness and quality until it reaches the global market.
As Mr. Bernard Wangamati and Mr. Cordell Fantroy departed back to the USA, the echoes of their visit reverberated through the coffee plantations and mills of Mt. Elgon. The tour not only showcased the rich tapestry of Kenya’s coffee industry but also underscored Elgon Coffee’s dedication to empowering farmers, ensuring the highest quality, and fostering sustainable partnerships that benefit all stakeholders.
