In the rolling hills of Kenya’s Mount Elgon region, a story of determination, compassion, and the pursuit
of quality coffee beans unfolded. Mr. Bernard Wangamati, a health practitioner in the USA, whose
journey started when he inherited a coffee farm from his 86-year-old father. Little did he know that this
inheritance would become the cornerstone of Elgon Coffee Distributors, a company with a mission to
make a difference in the lives of Kenyan coffee farmers and bring exceptional specialty coffee to the USA
market.

A Mission Born from Compassion

Mr. Bernard, originally from Bungoma, Western region in Kenya, couldn’t ignore the plight of the coffee
farmers in his homeland. He saw firsthand how they were being taken advantage of in terms of the
prices they received for their hard work. The vision to help these farmers, many of whom lived in
poverty and worked tirelessly on coffee farms, began to take shape.

Bringing His Father’s Legacy to the USA

The first step was to bring his father’s coffee to the USA. However, the production from his family farm
was not sufficient to make a substantial impact. That’s when Mr. Bernard had a brilliant idea – to
collaborate with the farmers in his district who shared his commitment to quality and fair prices.

Empowering Local Farmers

Elgon Coffee Distributors began by partnering with 50 small-scale farmers who took exceptional care of
their coffee farms. Through the company, they received essential extension services, which not only
helped them access the USA market but also improved the overall quality of their coffee. Today, the
Elgon family has grown to include 200 farmers, all dedicated to producing the finest specialty coffee
beans.

More Than Just Coffee

But Elgon Coffee Distributors is about more than just coffee. Mr. Bernard’s commitment to the
community extends to improving the lives of the farmers. This has been achieved by making clean water
accessible through boreholes, providing essential healthcare through medical camps, establishing
dispensaries, and ensuring the farmers have health coverage with the National Health Insurance Fund.
The burden of school fees has been lightened through supporting education programs, showing that
Elgon Coffee Distributors cares about the well-being and future of its farmers.

Sustainable Farming Practices

Elgon Coffee Distributors is committed to preserving the environment. We educate farmers on
sustainable farming practices, teaching them to produce organic specialty coffee. Homemade fertilizers
and herbicides that are eco-friendly are promoted, ensuring the delicate ecosystem of the Mount Elgon
region remains intact.
